Truth and Imagination: My Two Sources of Inspiration

Friends often ask me where I derive my inspiration from and whether the stories behind my songs are real. The truth is, my songs are a blend of personal experiences and creative writing.

Every song I write has a grain of truth in it. Whether it’s an emotion I’ve felt or an event I’ve taken part of or witnessed, there’s always an element of reality woven into the fabric of my music. Some songs are more autobiographical, while others are a fusion of imagination and personal reflection. Regardless, each one of them carries a little piece of me.

For me, the creative process begins with an emotion. It could be joy, heartbreak, or anything in between. I distill that emotion into a few words, often finding a home within the chorus — take for instance “I only saw the good side of you” in Good Side of You. These words serve as a focal point, guiding the direction of the song. The initial spark of inspiration often strikes when my mind is unburdened and free to wander. It could be in the shower, sitting by myself in a café, or during a peaceful walk in the countryside.

Once the emotional foundation is established, a melody begins to form. I don’t play any instrument, so I simply hum to myself. It starts with just a few notes, but if it catches my ear and lingers in my mind, I know it’s a promising start. From there, I build upon the melody, carefully crafting both the lyrics and the musical composition, and ensuring that each component (verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge) seamlessly intertwines with the others.

Songwriting is a beautiful fusion of personal experience, introspection, and creative expression. It’s a way for me to share my stories and emotions with the world, allowing others to connect with them on their own terms. So the next time you listen to one of my songs, know that there’s a part of me within it, and I hope it resonates with you in your own unique way.
