The Covid-19 pandemic presented us with unexpected opportunities for personal growth and exploration. Amidst the challenges, I discovered a newfound passion for singing. Although I had no prior experience, save for a few Happy Birthday tunes and quiet humming, I decided to learn how to sing. Little did I know that this decision would lead to an incredible artistic experience.
Unlocking artistic expression
As the pandemic confined us to our homes, I found solace in writing songs (read more about this here). However, my lack of musical knowledge and instrumental skills hindered my progress. Determined to overcome this obstacle, I made a choice that surprised me – I would learn how to sing. Singing seemed like a bridge between my songwriting and my desire to share my music with others. It would allow me to collaborate with musicians.
The Power of Proper Technique
My initial goal was simple: I wanted to sing my songs to musicians without feeling embarrassed. Little did I know that my singing lessons would provide me with a wealth of knowledge far beyond my expectations. My talented singing teacher, Hannah, patiently guided me through the intricacies of breathing techniques, diaphragm control, vocal placement, enunciation, note holding, and more. With each session, I grew more confident in my ability to control my voice and express myself through singing.
Daring to Believe in Myself
Beyond technical skills, my sessions with Hannah taught me an invaluable lesson: the importance of daring to believe in myself. Initially, I had planned to write songs for others to perform, believing my voice lacked the necessary quality for recording. However, Hannah wouldn’t have it. She encouraged me to sing and record my own songs, stressing that people are drawn to artists who sing their own words with genuine emotions. The authenticity and personal connection it conveys resonate deeply, surpassing any technical prowess. With her guidance, I found the courage to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the possibilities that lay before me.
Releasing My First Single
After just over two years of writing, learning, and growing, the moment arrived to share my songs with others. In May 2023, I released my first single, Good Side of You, in collaboration with Richard Marc Music. While the experience of hearing myself singing still feels peculiar and unfamiliar, and I am acutely aware that there is ample room for improvement, the act of sharing my inaugural song with family and friends filled me with joy. Their positive reception and unwavering support served as a powerful motivation, fueling my determination to continue recording more songs and further honing my craft.
You can do it too
While private singing lessons proved invaluable, it is worth noting that various other avenues exist. I have also benefited from free tutorials on YouTube, while joining a local choir provides an affordable option to improve your skills. As you share your passion for singing, exciting opportunities to collaborate with others will arise, opening doors to new creative projects and unknown destinations in your musical journey. Embrace the resources available and be open to the possibilities – you never know where your love for singing will take you.
