My Unexpected Journey Into Songwriting

The Transformative Power of Music

During the Covid-19 pandemic, like many others, I found myself struggling with isolation. In those quiet, often lonely days, I found solace and inspiration in poetry and songs. This blog is a record of the progress I have made as a songwriter since that time.

As lockdown kept us all indoors, I found refuge in the music that had defined my youth, and stumbled upon a familiar name evoking nostalgic memories from my teenage years – the Norwegian band a-ha. I delved deeper into their story and was intrigued by the diverse artistic pursuits of their keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, who has for many years been exploring the realms of poetry, songwriting, painting, sculpture, and more.

Inspired by Furuholmen’s creativity, I began to explore my own artistic inclinations. I started with poetry, finding solace in arranging words on paper as a way to process my emotions. A friend, noticing this new interest, suggested I try my hand at songwriting. Despite my lack of musical training, the idea took root and I wrote a couple of songs.

Rather than learning an instrument, which would have taken a long time, I decided to focus on singing. I harboured a modest hope that if I could sing, I might someday collaborate with musicians to bring my lyrics to life. As soon as restrictions eased, I sought out a local singing teacher to guide me.

My new vocal coach, Hannah, not only taught me to sing but also introduced me to her brother Richard, a music producer and songwriting tutor. Under his guidance, I began to hone the craft of songwriting and musical storytelling.

After months of practice and learning, I had written a small collection of songs. We chose one to record, and with Richard’s help, turned it into a fully produced track. The result exceeded my expectations, and on 12 May 2023, I released my first single, Good Side of You, on all major music platforms.

This experience has opened up a new world for me. I’m continuing to learn about songwriting and music production, embracing the challenges and joys that come with it. It’s been a surprising and fulfilling journey, one that I never anticipated when those first lockdown days began.

Music has become more than just a pastime; it’s now a way for me to express myself and connect with others. As I continue on this path, I’m curious to see where it might lead and grateful for the unexpected turns life can take.
